Reading Response 6

“Life on the Rocks” is about traveler’s who go to the Galapagos Islands and explore the whole island and its beauty. They ventured to the mountains and saw many animals, very distinct and amazing creatures. Its said that Charles Darwin came to the Island in 1835 when he was just twenty six years old. Darwinism today is called neo-darwinism because of the new data from modern genetics. An issue with neo-darwinism is that is lacks reliability and helpful information. The hardcore Christians (Fundamentalist) still reject darwinism because they both have different views on the creation of earth. Darwin has finches named after himself called the Darwin Finches, they look like sparrows and are all over the island. Geography is a very important factor in speciation. There is a song that everyone sings there as well about how great the island is.

A part that i liked was: “The rocks shape life like hands around swelling dough. In Virginia, the salamanders vary from mountain ridge to mountain ridge; so do the fiddle tunes the old men play.” This was a beautiful description describing life and intensity of the island.

The Galapagos Island just seems to be all nature and a getaway island, what is there to do as far as technology? I believe the Galapagos Island is mainly just based on a getaway island because it seemed to me while i was reading the passage that it just one big green island with lots of animals and reptiles. The island has villagers rather than city folks. It has vast land and many areas to study and research science within all the nature.

Writing Response 4

Yes I have come up with an enthymeme with the last writing response. Possible Enthymeme: Einstein was correct when saying the human race has done and thought is concerned with the satisfaction of deeply felt needs and the assuagement of pain because we as humans created a bomb that could destroy ourselves in a matter of seconds. Support: This could be supported with Pg. 452 “Feeling and desire are the motive force behind all human endeavor and human creation, in however exalted a guise the latter may present itself to us.” or in Carson’s passage how she spoke about how we as humans are moving way too fast in technology. You can use that argument against the making of the atomic bomb.

Why Would the Humans create such a bomb?

- We as a society have progressed in technology way too much for our own good.

Why did we move so fast as a society?

- I believe America always tries to be better than other countries, and tries to be more advanced in technology.

How does Cosmic religion or just religion in general fall into all this?

- Religion plays a huge role in this world on how people correspond to eachother.

Textual Proof: Pg. 453, “The individual feels the nothingness of human desires and aims and the sublimity and marvelous order which reveal themselves both in Nature and in the world of thought…. The religious geniuses of all ages have been distinguished by this kind of religious feeling, which knows no dogma and no God concieved in man’s image; so that there can be no church whose central teachings are based on it.”

Reading Response 5

“The Concept of the Paradise Garden” by John Brooks is about The Quran and how it dictates how the people of the Islamic world should live their lives. The Quran is filled with laws and morals/ethics that should be taught everyday. In the Quran they talk about something called a Garden, and this Garden is symbol for the Islamic people, it stands for paradise. To them the garden is just a reflection of God, for all the beauty it holds within. They have their own artwork which are elements, but it shows unity.

“How Should Chemists Think?” by Roald Hoffmann is about the natural and unnatural world, and the difference between them is arbitrary. So men and women for example are natural. Chemistry is the science of the transformation of molecules. Chemists are highly intelligent and can calculate any products one should get in their medication. On the other hand, Organic chemists are very highly capable at controlling in zero dimensions. But the thought that man can do better than nature is just plain ignorant. We have gotten so many transformation from nature.

“The Erosion of Civilization” by Jared Diamond is about how civilization came to be and how Iraq unlike other countries are not so technologically capable as much as other countries. Until 8500 BC, people of all worlds got food by getting wild plants and hunting animals. Today, any country can act or pose like a threat to any other country. Iraq’s downfall holds a difference importance than any other country because of the state they are in and what they are known for in other countries. Diamond is saying the best way to solve a third world countries issue is to help the environment and basic health problems.

“Mutant Bacteria and the Failure of Antibiotics” by Meret Reitveld is about how bacteria and germs are EVERYWHERE. Most infections are either bacterial or viral, the bacterial infections are able to be cured by antibiotics. Penicillin was one of the most antibiotics to be created which was found in mold and is actually made out of mold. Just like hospitals, the meat industry is a source of resistance to drugs. Scientists are still researching with animals to find possible antibiotics. But there are always going to be those bacteria that are resistant to any sort of medicine, which has become a huge problem.

Two of the readings that were similar were “How Should Chemists Think” by Roald Hoffmann and “Mutant Bacteria and the Failure of Antibiotics” by Meret Reitvald because they were both mainly on the subject of science and spoke about how medicine is a huge part of todays society, and how we go to nature to find more and more cures.

Ryan Cornateanu

27 October 2009

Writing Response 3

Some of the questions of issues that were brought up in class were based mainly on the environment and nature. Like some question of issues would be question of ethics or morals, Einstein brought up a point that we as a country created a bomb that could destroy ourselves in a matter of seconds. A question at issue for Carson’s point would be that we as humans are moving too much with technology that we are completely forgetting about the nature that comes out of nature. Maser spoke about how we have these bad unconscious thoughts in our head that we need to be able to control by doing everyday outdoor things. The intersections of science, religion, and the environment is that they all can be a spiritual subject to a certain degree, this is important because we can all relate to someone who is a scientist but not religious, or vise versa.

Possible Enthymeme: Einstein was correct when saying the human race has done and thought is concerned with the satisfaction of deeply felt needs and the assuagement of pain because we as humans created a bomb that could destroy ourselves in a matter of seconds.

This could be supported with Pg. 452 “Feeling and desire are the motive force behind all human endeavor and human creation, in however exalted a guise the latter may present itself to us.” or in Carson’s passage how she spoke about how we as humans are moving way too fast in technology.

Ryan Cornateanu

25 October, 2009

Reading Response 4

“The Window of Our Cultural Soul” by Chris Maser is about how our minds and nature are all somewhat connected and that we all have unconscious natures. As long as archetypes that are unconscious, there will always be problems in the world. As humans become more aware of the unconscious thoughts and the way we show our archetypes in nature, apparently we get something called “double vision”. Although art is not an expression of this “double vision”, they show symbolism through work such as paintings or photographs. There are two approaches to Landscape art, objective and subjective. The objective shows visual aspects and the subjective shows insight in values and manners.

“Religion and Science” by Albert Einstein is about the human kind and what we have accomplished in the world today. Einstein also talks about how we create a weapon that can even destroy ourselves in a matter of seconds. It was said that the Jews talked about how the development of religion to the fear of moral religion, all civilized people apparently have moral religion. Cosmic religious feelings give man strength to a certain degree. Einstein also says why its so easy for him to see why churches have fought science and completely shunned its devotees.

“The Obligation to Endure” by Rachel Carson is about the history of everything in some sort. Power everywhere has increased so much and so rapidly. Apparently in the modern world, there is no time like there was in the past. The reason everything is happening so rapidly and fast is not because of the change in nature, but the change in man kind and how much we are progressing. All the vital medicines or vitamins that used to be essential to us in nature became nothing because as humans we now rely on laboratories to make us our fix. It is the public for themselves to assume the risks that we are taking.

Albert Einstein’s “Religion and Science” and Rachel Carson’s “The Obligation to Endure” were very similar in the sense because they both spoke about how man-kind is slowly getting more and more corrupted. Einstein’s view was more on the fact that we base who we are and who we are with on religion, and that religion is the reason everyone has become so fearful of each other. Carson was talking how we are progressing too much and too fast for our own good, that we don’t even see the good that comes out of nature anymore because we are reliant on people who make stuff in laboratories. Einstein and Carson go together when saying society moved too fast, how so? Einstein said that we created our own weapon of mass destruction that can destroy ourselves in a matter of seconds.

Writing Response for Essay Prompt

Since I did not have a meeting with Ms. Rasbach, i will do the best i can with the revision outline. My initial revision plan was more to make my paper opinion based rather than fact based. I put a lot of facts in there which is good but i need to show more how i feel on the subject.

I. Why was the bomb dropped in the first place

A. The bomb was dropped because America had suffered too many loses for them not to retaliate.

B. John Connor mentioned that the atomic bomb was very necessary and it was needed to end the war, and it saved both American and Japanese lives.

II. Was it ethical to use such a bomb?

A. I don’t think you can use the word ethical for such a tragedy, but more of a question of necessity.

B. The atomic bomb was not made has a peace-maker, but i believe it was meant to send messages to other countries to show that you can’t mess with one country for too long and get away with it.

III. Right or Wrong?

A. Just because it wasn’t ethical, it doesn’t make it wrong… The U.S. would have never really known if the Red Army was going to actually go through with their declaration of war that if we did not strike the Japanese where it hurts, if they would have really learned their lesson or not.

B. Although the atomic bomb could give dangerous ideas to other countries, it still put Japan back in its place and showed them you cant mess with the U.S. for too much longer.

The questions that i have to answer for my essay 1.2 is a question of ethics and morals, because in my past essay i focused more on facts rather than the actually ethical issue.

First paragraph: Reading Both passages, The “U.S. was Right” by John Connor and “The U.S. was Wrong” by Gar Alperovitz, i have come to an understanding that it was key that the U.S. used the atomic bomb in August 1945 because the U.S. was would have never really known if the Red Army was going to actually go through with their declaration of war or that if we did not strike the Japanese where it hurts, if they would have really learned their lesson or not. Although there are many controversies on why it should or should not have been dropped, but the fact of the matter is, it has been dropped. It was said that Harry S. Truman knew he could have ended the war without having to drop the atomic bomb. Both arguments were valid from both authors, but the truth is America did what had to be done and the war ended because of it. No one said war ends in greatness and it wasn’t tragic; it will always end in suffering and sadness no matter how you look at it. In this paper i will show from both points of view how one looks at the atomic bomb but through out i will talk about the moral and ethics from both sides and conclude it.

I use Microsoft Word to write my papers. I use this program because i have been using this since i was in like 2nd grade. I have no idea what the teacher assumes Im using.

The way you insert a header and an automatic page number is: Insert, Then auto text, then you choose from the many that say for example: author and page number.

My Microsoft Word has 1 inch margins to the left and up, and top and bottom, it was default like that.

My default spacing is single space, which means there isnt really space between the lines, if you’d like to change it to double or 1.5 then highlight the whole essay and click paragraph and choose which one you would like.

Ryan Cornateanu

10-13-09

Discussion Question #1

Sidney Shalett said, “it was obvious that officials at the highest levels made the important decision to release news of the atomic bomb because of the psychological effect it may have in forcing Japan to surrender. A spokesman said: “Why bother with psychological warfare against an enemy that already is beaten and hasn’t sense enough to quit and save herself from utter doom?”" What was the point of dropping a bomb on a country that already was in its own misery?

This question really describes this passage because the whole point Sidney Shalett was trying to make was that the atomic bomb should not have been dropped on a country that was already defeated. After writing my essay of agreeing with John Connor and supporting the fact that the bomb was dropped, I really second guessed my answer. Maybe it was pointless for America to drop the bomb because is it ethical to do this to a country that is in disorder. President Truman told the Japanese abruptly that “the end is not yet” I feel in a way Mr. Truman played with the Japanese a little bit and taunted them with the this great and massive bomb. America has put more than $2,000,000 into the research and production of this bomb and talking in future sense, was this all worth it? In some ways yes and in some ways no. I believe the after effect of this bomb was tragic and no country or persons should have to deal with it. Also you have to consider what will happen to the country economically after such a bomb is dropped. I assume that Japan went through some hell after the bomb was dropped.

Enthymeme

An enthymeme is a link made from the relationship of a reason and a conclusion.

The difference between a thesis and an enthymeme is that the thesis is the opening argument for your paper which basically sets up all the reasons you are going to write about and an enthymeme connects your thesis to a conclusion.

I do believe i can create an enthymeme from my thesis: Reading both passages, The U.S. Was Right by John Connor and The U.S. Was Wrong by Gar Alperovitz, I have come to understand that it was key that U.S. had dropped the bomb in August 1945 because it put Japan back in its place and showed them that you can’t keep on messing with the U.S. for so long without repercussions.

This tells me that my essay was well put together with reasons, facts, and conclusion if i was able to write an enthymeme from my thesis.

Ms. Rasbach

Writing 121

6 October, 2009

Questions at Issue

Audience is a group of listeners or viewers at a public event.

Discourse Community is complex ways of intercommunication within the group and all members of the group have relevance to each other.

Questions at issue are questions that are based on current or past issues: Questions of an ongoing problem, Questions of value, Questions of morals… etc.

Stasis Questions would be questions trying to arrive at certain point or issue.

Six questions would be Questions of fact, questions of consequence, questions of value, questions of interpretation, questions of definition, and questions of policy.

Three questions that Connor and Alperovitz observe is questions of consequence because when the bomb was dropped, a main issue was whether it going to back fire back on the U.S. since the Russians now know what it is really capable of. The Second question is question of policy because Alperovitz pointed out that Mr. Truman was not supposed to drop the bomb because he did not get permission from anybody and it was wrong in so many ways since the Japanese emperor offered a peace treaty. The third question would be question of value because it was very immoral to kill so many innocent people who had nothing to do with the war. Three possible questions would be… Was the bomb worth so many lives and repercussions? Was Mr. Truman allowed to even drop the atomic bomb? And What will the Russians now do? Now that they know what the atomic bomb is capable of.

Para1: What was original purpose for the bomb

Para2: Why did U.S. think it was necessary

Para3: Mr. Trumans view on war

Para4: Japanese aftermath

Para5: Conclude what all these means in the future
